Agree, they didn't have that odd manufacturing restriction, you could build up as many units as you needed to completely overwhelm the board and have multiple skirmishes in multiple areas.

Why did they cancel?

10:24 PM Aug 21 2012

From Origin (owned by EA): "Thank you for ordering from Origin. At your request, or at the request of the fulfiller and/or the manufacturer, the following was canceled from your order."

From the manufacturer, EA: "We are sorry to inform you that the product you pre-ordered will not be released as expected. We have therefore cancelled the following product from your order."

They then go on to explain that they are turning it into a free to play game (as far as I can figure out).

http://www.commandandconquer.com/free/

"We are proud to announce Command & Conquer – EA’s first free online game powered by Frostbite 2. Now you can experience the cutting edge visuals, sound and destruction of a full AAA franchise for free. The electrifying Generals 2 game-play and universe that we’ve already created will now become the first free offering in Command & Conquer."

And finally this:

What does this mean to you?

• You will NOT be charged for your preorder of Command & Conquer Generals 2.

• You will have FREE digital access to the new HD digital game: Command & Conquer, featuring the same strategic action and fast-paced gameplay set in the Generals 2 universe, powered by the Frostbite 2 engine.

• You can sign up for a chance to access the beta version of the game at the link below.

We hope that you are as excited as we are as the series that defined real-time-strategy takes the next step into digital HD! Please go to www.commandandconquer.com/free for more information.

Now I'm just confused as ever.

Well, making it free is a good thing, right?

We'll see. Diving into the free to play swamp isn't necessarily a good thing. I tried the facebook C&C app and it sucked. I was looking forward to the same fun playbility of the old game with dramatically updated graphics, but turning it into a F2P/Web game isn't really what I was thinking.
