Selling You on Facebook - WSJ.com
"Many popular Facebook apps are obtaining sensitive information about users—and users' friends—so don't be surprised if details about your religious, political and even sexual preferences start popping up in unexpected places."
I'm still waiting for the other shoe to drop.
A company cannot change privacy defaults regularly as Facebook does without karmic repercussions.
Not until there is an acceptable alternative...
Perhaps it's not an alternative we want.
Facebook wasn't an alternative to email; it was something different entirely.
I was referring to Friendster -> MySpace -> Facebook -> ?
Oh.
Maybe there is no next, and Facebook is an evolutionary dead end?
It could happen.
What I mean is I think you're right that people are frustrated and they will get more frustrated but Facebook has become all but a basic utility at this point.
Just like we shake our fist at the cable company or our electric bill but feel pretty powerless to do anything, I think many feel that way about Facebook.
It's their lifeline to so many relationships (and to many it's very entertaining) and it's part of the infrastructure of the net. Killing your account doesn't feel like a realistic option.
So until there's a true alternative viable social network, people will shake their fist... and then log on again.
After watching the biggest hits of the last five years -- Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram, and Pinterest -- I honestly wonder what consumers want out of a social network, since none of those products serve any need but self expression.
Facebook is so focused on life events (eg: BIRTHDAYS) and photos (eg: PARTIES) that I wonder after the novelty wears off if people even want that.
You mentioned that your Facebook is disposable. So is mine. We can't be the only ones.
Maybe Facebook is a fad, and putting that information online is actually ridiculous.
Maybe the Muggles will get social network fatigue just like the rest of us.
Facebook broke my friend count so I don't get requests anymore. It's liberating!
