1. Will the smartphone/tablet industry stratify the way the PC business did?

Absolutely, once innovation plateau's, they start concentrating on features. We're at the top of the screen size with 6.4" 1080p screens being overkill in the consumer acceptance for a phone, new processors are awesome, but already we have quad+1 cores that are battery smart, so features it is.

2. If the industry stratifies, will the lion’s share of the profits go to the OS and application layers as it did for PCs?

I think there's a middleware layer below apps and above the OS. HTC is by far one of my favorite companies. I think value added features like HTC sense and other truly HTC specific UX stuff generates brand loyalty and like/loveability.
