Bike commuting: start in the springtime

Why fight the rhythm of the seasons? The best time to start (or re-start) cycling regularly is springtime, after the heavy rains have stopped but before it gets super hot. You'll also be giving yourself the maximum chance to get comfortable on the bike before winter comes again. Also there are flowers blooming and birds singing!

A great event to help you get your mind right for spring cycling is Bike to Work Day. Train for a month beforehand and you should be good to go by mid-May. Most areas will bike to work on May 18th 2012, but some locales -- like the Bay Area -- go on a slightly different day. Check here for details:

Remember that you don't have to bike the whole way to participate in Bike to Work Day. Bike + train, bus, carpool, taxi, or walking is awesome. You're still cool even if you have to drive part of the way.
