If you’re sending dates across systems, there really is no excuse not to be using ISO8601
You can even send dates to your Antkythera Mechanism:
The year 1 BC must be written as 0000. The year 2 BC must be written as -0001, the year 3 BC must be written as -0002 etc.
I did a double take before I realized, "Oh right, 1 BC is year zero."
