There are at least three strange things about this article:

1. It was written by the Ooyala CEO, not a founder. He took over Ooyala several years after they started so what does he know about "ground up"? http://techcrunch.com/2009/08/10/ooyala-brings-in-jay-fulcher-as-new-ceo/

2. He refers to a Fred Wilson article about retaining employees. When has Fred ever run a startup? He hasn't. He's been a VC for 25 years. So why should we trust his opinions on startup hiring since his job has only been to hire or retain CEOs? http://www.avc.com/a_vc/about.html/

3. In the entire article Jay Fulcher never mentions having an awesome mission or a world changing product. That seems wrong to me. http://techcrunch.com/2012/07/02/how-to-build-a-successful-company-from-the-ground-up/
