Think bike helmets improve bike safety? Think again.

Not only did mandatory helmet use cause a sharp dip in number of cyclists, but it INCREASED injuries per capita.

Because car drivers were more aggressive?

Cars ARE more aggressive -- on average they drive about 3 inches closer to a cyclist wearing a helmet -- but also the cyclists are thought to be more confident.

Unintended consequences.

It's like people who drink diet soda on average subconsciously eat more.

More reasons not to use a bike helmet:

The same thing has happened at ski areas, with the increased use of helmets.  They believe it is caused by over confidence from wearing a helmet, it makes you more gutsy ;)

Not just more gutsy but you feel like you can go faster.
