Parkinson's Disease And Depression Can Make Each Other Worse
Janill Gilbert stashed this in Mental Health
Alongside his public struggle with addiction and depression, Robin Williams was also much more privately dealing with early stages of Parkinson's disease, his wife Susan Schneider revealed in a statement.
"Robin's sobriety was intact and he was brave as he struggled with his own battles of depression, anxiety as well as early stages of Parkinson's Disease," the statement read, "which he was not yet ready to share publicly."
Geez, poor Robin Williams.
Was addiction the consequence of depression and anxiety or just a separate problem?
I think addiction and depression can sometimes be like the chicken or the egg story. Hard to tell which came first, everyone is different, some use drugs to self medicate their psych disorders, but drugs also cause psych disorders; which most the time will resolve when the drug is stopped, but not always.
The very drugs used for depression can cause depression, and suicidal thoughts and actions. At least one Parkinson med I came across can cause depression, not many RX drugs come with no side effects. IMO, it's best to stay away from as many of them as one can. Much better to make lifestyle changes where possible, than to take a drug to fix the problem. Of course medications are life saving too, but many, people could get off of with some lifestyle changes ;)
Is depression itself caused by chemistry or something else?
It sounds like a very hard problem to deal with!
I'm not sure what the thinking is now, biochemistry, I believe is what the scientists have been chasing for many years, with some success, but it seems like it can be really difficult to find what med or combination of meds will work, and the meds can cause many problems themselves, not a fun problem to deal with.
It's a misunderstood problem whose root cause is also not well understood.
No wonder there are no good solutions yet. We need to learn more.
