“Trust in some circumstances is a good thing – not being able to trust your family would be a pretty horrible way to live – but there is no reason why we need to trust distant and hierarchical entities that we know little about, like large corporations and banks. Quite often, such entities have every incentive to deceive us and even exploit us; US banks extorting the federal government for a nearly-trillion-dollar bailout with the claimed threat of collapsing the economy in 2008 is perhaps the best example. If we can structure our relationships so that any trust that we do have is diffused between a very large group of entities, then we can lay the foundation for a much more stable society.”
