Hey everyone who had their consciousness raised about ALS through the Ice Bucket Challenge, guess what? Good news! Scientists have found the biomechanism that breaks down in ALS sufferers. Also, everyone who thinks they can come up with a "disruptive" idea in 90 days? This guy has been studying ALS for more than 25 years.

Wow, it's a testament to having the perseverance to keep working on a problem for decades.

Very inspiring!

This is GREAT news!  There is hope not only for those afflicted with ALS but for those with dementia as well!

But let's hope *this* doesn't become the next fund-raising challenge:

"I told Dr. Siddique's office, if I could cut off my arm and send it to them I would if it would help them in the research," she said. "I would do anything. It is so important to me to be able to find some kind of cure for this awful disease.".

What's the connection between ALS and dementia?

Agreed, we don't need an arm cutoff challenge.

I don't know the specifics but "The discovery provides an opening to finding treatments for ALS and could also pay dividends by showing the way to treatments for other, more common neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, dementia and Parkinson's, Siddique said."

It makes sense that neurodegenerative diseases are related. Thanks Geege.
