Twitter Blames Apple For Its Slow User Growth

Twitter Inc. ’s closely watched user growth nearly ground to a halt in the fourth quarter, a continued sore point for the company even as revenue keeps surging.
The company said it gained a net total of 4 million users in the period, giving it 288 million at year-end. The 1.4% hike from three months earlier was the lowest on record for the company and for the first time fell below user growth of Facebook Inc., which has about five times more users.
Still, investors sent Twitter’s shares up nearly 10%, or $4.04, to $$45.30 in after-hours trading in part because of finance chief Anthony Noto ’s suggestion that the meager growth should be a blip. The shares had fallen about 15% since the last earnings.
Mr. Noto said the rollout of Apple Inc. ’s iOS 8 software cost Twitter 4 million users in the quarter. The change to iOS 8 erased 1 million Twitter users because they forget their password or never re-downloaded the app.
An additional 3 million users were lost because of a change to Apple’s Safari mobile browser no longer automatically pulled content from Twitter.
