This preserve used to be called Bolinas Lagoon preserve, and almost everyone still refers to by that name. In the spring, herons and egrets nest here in large numbers.

Actually the herons have moved on! They no longer nest here, but apparently now are to be found around the beginning of April in downtown Bolinas. The egrets had not yet arrived at the preserve by that date, but if you really NEED to see egrets you should call ahead of time.

The best thing about this preserve is that there are tons of birder volunteers at the major lookout points who are more than happy to help you learn how to use the field glasses, telescopes, field guides, and other tools of the hobby.

I should note that the hike here is more like a walk in the woods with nice views of Bolinas Lagoon and the grazing parts of Point Reyes. Gets surprisingly hot during nesting season.
