Why Don't Americans Fight the Rich?
Joyce Park stashed this in History
I saw a tweet fairly recently that showed a graph of wealth inequality with a comment like "Graphs like this show up in history books right before revolutions happen". But when historians look back at this period of American history, the thing they will study is why the masses did NOT revolt. This is a review of a new book about the last Gilded Age, which any Martin Scorsese fan will know was as violently unequal as any period in our history... and what its lessons for our future might be.
It IS a violent time in American history: We're still at an unreasonably high number of shootings occurring. It's just that those shootings attack each other, not the rich.
The masses are too busy trying to make ends meet to think about revolting. It's only once enough people can't make ends meet that something revolutionary occurs.
