Fitness enthusiasts may soon be able to shop while they work out.
In the latest product to marry shopping and wrist accessories,American Express Co. and Jawbone plan this week to announce that AmEx cardholders will soon be able to make purchases using their fitness band at certain merchants, according to people familiar with the plan.
Fitness bands made by Jawbone and rival Fitbit have become popular as a way for consumers to track calories burned, miles walked and other statistics related to their physical activity. The AmEx partnership would be the latest example of payment mechanisms moving from a traditional plastic card to another device.
The move comes just days after Apple Inc. released a so-called smartwatch that includes a payment mechanism along with a wide range of other functions, from checking email to measuring your heart rate.
The AmEx payment mechanism won’t be part of Jawbone’s newest product, called the UP3, which is being shipped later this month. Instead, it will be available on a future offering from the San Francisco consumer-technology company, according to a person familiar with the situation.
