The most predictable disaster in the history of the human race
Joyce Park stashed this in Science
Giant pandemics are seemingly inevitable. The flu is the one that scares Bill Gates. When I see what happened here in the Bay Area with measles and polio -- lots of residents and visitors who frequently fly to countries with poor vaccination rates, corrupt governments, challenged public health organizations, declining US vaccination rates, no screening whatsoever at the airports, public transit organizations like BART somehow being tasked with informing the public that they WERE exposed days ago -- I can see exactly how this will go down. A global network of citizen scientists would be invaluable in a pandemic situation, but no one can seem to organize such a thing.
A pandemic disease is the most predictable catastrophe in the history of the human race, if only because it has happened to the human race so many, many times before.
