How Many Scientists Does It Take to Write a Paper? Apparently, Thousands

Stashed in: Science!, Charts!

The winner of this massive expansion in credit on scientific papers? Georges Aad of the Large Hadron Collider.

A paper with a thousand authors just plain sounds ridiculous.

Is this really the main way we get scientists to collaborate?

Organized science is as subject to corruption as organized religion. There are only two universally accepted currencies in academic research: publications and grants, and both are mutually dependent. Add ego and you have a tempting ménage a trois and a household that disincentivizes the solitary eureka so critical to discovery.  However, the successful  execution of the scientific method also requires a fellowship to transform individual ideas into universally accepted insights.

I and other neuroscientists are interested in deconstructing current scientific paradigms to allow a free exchange of data and ideas while providing the necessary incentives for individual discovery. This transformation will not be easy and is still in its early stages...but good science requires optimism, if only in the fundamental rationality of the physical world! I like that vision of OneMind, Ron.

I've noticed there are other collaborative efforts too, such as Cancer Commons:
