2014: Little League Baseball has stripped the U.S. championship from Chicago-based Jackie Robinson West and suspended its coach for violating a rule prohibiting the use of players who live outside the geographic area that the team represents, it was announced Wednesday.
The organization found that Jackie Robinson West used a falsified boundary map and that team officials met with neighboring Little League districts in Illinois to claim players and build what amounts to a superteam.
Not sure how I feel about this.
Seems like they did create a superteam, which goes against the spirit of the competition.
It's sad, but it should be stripped. Other coaches of the area informed him what he was doing was against the rules and they would be disqualified, so he did it knowingly. It's not fair to the kids, but it's completely self-inflicted. Little League rules are extremely strict and they've had to thwart all types of cheating including fake birth certificates claiming kids are years younger, kids swapping, fake addresses, and all sorts of other shenanigans which is even *LESS* fair to the teams and coaches that abide by the rules. I remember someone posted this to PW previously where the coach tried to make it a racial/racist thing to try to cover up his cheating. I thought that was extremely appalling too.
Yeah, that makes sense.
It's not fair to the kids, but it wasn't fair to everyone they competed with, either.
