Racial Profiling Via Nextdoor.com
J Thoendell stashed this in Tech
White Oakland residents are increasingly using the popular social networking site to report "suspicious activity" about their Black neighbors — and families of color fear the consequences could be fatal.
I don't know anything about that situation but what you cut and pasted is not good.
Everyone knows that Nextdoor really only appeals to the kind of older ladies who peek out their curtains and see the bogeyman everywhere -- or their male counterpart, the authoritarian dude whose property is covered with cleverly hidden Dropcams. The problem is that they get together on there and validate/normalize each other's racism.
I guess Oakland is Ground Zero for this because 1) history of racial tension, 2) they don't have enough police so people are extra paranoid, and 3) the city told them to install Nextdoor.
The Oakland police department has been under a consent decree and then court-ordered supervision for many years now due to a history of gross racism... and even THEY don't know how to deal with the complaints of Nextdoor users. That is some next-level racism there, white Oaklanders!
