The Strangest, Most Spectacular Bridge Collapse (And How We Got It Wrong)
Joyce Park stashed this in History
I grew up within walking distance of the Tacoma Narrows, and I sort of can't believe we've been wrong about the physics of the bridge collapse all this time!
It is frightening how wrong we were about the physics of bridge collapses.
Still thinking about the implications of these unknown unknowns.
Galloping Gertie! :)
I was on the 520 floating bridge during a big windstorm; which caused huge waves to continually crash against the bridge, and it was moving the bridge around so much it was very disorienting to be in a moving vehicle on a moving bridge!
Galloping Gertie is a cute name for such a scary thing!
I did look through that whole link today about the bridge, and it has to be the most extensive study of the bridge in one place on the internet, interesting all the physics study that came out of that bridge, guess it's failure served some purpose ;)
