Is Text Messaging the New Email for Recruiters?

"Text messages are read over 95% of the time, while emails only receive an average  20% open rate."

- but to me text messages seem more intrusive than emails.  I can see them being used after the connection and a mutual interest is established, but not for the initial contact.  

Especially considering that not everyone has phone plans with unlimited SMSs.

I agree with you that texts are more intrusive than emails, so tread lightly, if at all.
