"Opinion: The AMA is wrong about banning drug ads"

They should start with their own membership, by banning researchers and doctors from taking drug company money.

Now that you mention it, researchers and doctors taking drug company money seems like a massive conflict of interest. 

"According to a study on DTC marketing that was conducted by Eli Lilly, 25 percent of patients who were prompted to visit their doctor after seeing an ad were given a new diagnosis. Of those patients, 43 percent were a “high priority” diagnosis for a serious health condition, like diabetes or hypertension. That same study indicated that 53 percent of physicians felt that DTC ads lead to better discussions with patients because patients are better educated and informed." The opinion believes that the ads encourage more and better conversations between people and their doctors. Which is probably true. 

But there still seems to be a conflict of interest because they're selling something.

I would argue that patients exposed to ads are not "better educated and informed" in their conversations with their doctors, at least when it comes to their medical condition. Not when their medical education comes from marketing ploys:

I agree with you, most marketing does not seem like education. 

I really get tired of the ads on TV, seems like 50% or more are about pharmaceutical drugs, I would rather get my medical advice from my healthcare professional, than from a for profit Big Pharma company.  I would guess this is only a United States oddity. 

Janill, that's my understanding: this is a U.S. phenomenon.
