Brandon Belt aka #BabyGiraffe isn't locked in on the Giants roster yet.
Adam Rifkin stashed this in Giants!
From Jon Heyman:
Belt's chances seems to depend a bit on who one talks to, as there are supporters for another prospect Brett Pill, who at 27 is four years Belt's senior. The other first baseman is Aubrey Huff, the veteran who's locked in and making $9 million. The Giants have quite a puzzzle. Nate Schierholtz was the sure starter in right field at the start of camp, but veteran journeyman Gregor Blanco has worked his way into the mix with a strong spring (though one Giants person identified Blanco as "the fourth outfielder'' in an interview). Huff, Belt and Pill all have played some outfield.
Some of the fans seem to think Belt isn't appreciated by top Giants decision makers. Manager Bruce Bochy said, "He's had a nice spring. We think a lot of Brandon. That would be one of out more difficult calls.''
Bochy just hinted that the Giants will start with Belt at 1B and Huff at LF:
...when asked if Belt will be at first base for the regular-season opener against Arizona on Friday, he did nothing do dispel the notion.
"He's been getting most of the playing time there,'' Bochy said. "We've said we'd put the bats out there that are swinging well."
Andy Behrans added, "Belt is hitting .389/.430/.625 this spring, so he's swinging as well as any Giants hitter at the moment. It looks like he'll open at first base, bumping Aubrey Huff to the outfield. You win, Belt drafter."
