Chainsmokers and Halsey song Closer Finally Hits No. 1 on Billboard + Twitter Top Tracks Chart After 14 Weeks:
After 13 weeks of lingering in the top 10 of the Billboard + Twitter Top Tracks chart, The Chainsmokers’ “Closer” finally hits No. 1 in its 14th week on the list, darting 8-1 to lead the chart dated Nov. 12. The single, which features Halsey, is the first No. 1 for both acts on the list. It’s the second-slowest climb to No. 1 on the nearly two-and-a-half-year-old list, behind the 32-week rise of Little Mix’s “Secret Love Song,” featuring Jason Derulo.
Billboard + Twitter Top Tracks is a weekly ranking of the most shared and/or mentioned songs on Twitter in the U.S., ranked by the volume of shares over a seven-day period (Monday to Sunday).
The song’s coronation on Top Tracks comes as the song spends its 11th consecutive week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. For the past 13 weeks, “Closer” bounced around the top 10, never going lower than No. 9. Despite its tremendous success on radio, streaming services and in download sales, the closest it got to No. 1 on Top Tracks -- until this week -- was when it ranked at No. 2 for two frames on Sept. 17 and Sept. 24. In those weeks, it was blocked from the top by Ariana Grande’s “Side to Side,” featuring Nicki Minaj, and Lady Gaga’s “Perfect Illusion,” respectively.
The collaboration’s rise comes after its official music video was released Oct. 24, and the clip has jumped to more than 26.5 million global views on YouTube through Nov. 3. The new video release helps “Closer” maintain its monopoly of the No. 1 rank of the Hot 100, claiming the summit for an 11th straight week, the most of any song in 2016.
