The insane thing is that ARM only licenses technology. It doesn't actually make chips.
If this works out, ARM could replace Intel as the dominant chip architecture...
What's the main reason that Apple prefers ARM chips? Performance?
for mobile it's performance/watt.
perf/watt is also the original reason that Apple switched from PowerPC to Intel. We may see another transition if ARM keeps chipping away at Intel's lead.
More significant though is if ARM ever makes inroads into server farms. 64 bit, 16-core high-IO ARM SoC would be a killer, killer server chip. You could fit 4-8 of those in the space of a single Intel blade server...
