Diane Ravitch on Gates Foundation: "Who elected them? Why should they have the power to shape American education?" #ideasforum
Ottway Ducard stashed this in education
I don't understand Diane's point.
Can't any nonprofit do what they want?
Yes, they can. Her point is that Bill Gates and specifically the Gates Foundation are influencing education to incredible amounts.
Think Super-PACs on the election post-Citizens United.
Many wealthy donors are funding slates of candidates for local school boards (city-wide) as well as state senator elections that favor their (unproven)educational theories.
Her point is that the golden rule is law: he who has the most gold, makes the laws about our kids in education, regardless of the efficacy or worthiness of their idea.
That's not just true about education. It pretty much describes most aspects of America.
But she happens to care about education and is calling people's attention to it.
She has a massive following. She's basically the David Plouffe of education;
It's important that she gives a voice to the teachers, to the students, to the lower-income folks to fight back against the charter schools and companies like k12 who want to swallow american k12 education for-profit but DONT ACTUALLY HELP STUDENTS more effectively than public schools.
Kudos to her for her work.
