Kim-Mai Cutler's TechCrunch article has this great line from Paul Graham:

"Our whole approach to scaling Y Combinator is the standard approach to scaling software."

Examples of companies that didn't start with YCombinator: Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Tumblr, Zynga, Groupon, Square, Foursquare, Instagram, Flipboard, Pulse, Pinterest.

Examples of companies that did start with YCombinator: Dropbox, Airbnb, Heroku, etc.

Some other notes about YCombinator that I'm not sure where else to put so I will stash them here:

1. Drew Houston / Dropbox was not accepted the first time they applied to YCombinator.

Drew's application was quite good, actually.

2. YCombinator kicked out but they succeeded anyway.

3. Airbnb sold cereal to stay alive. PG says he was skeptical of the Airbnb idea, but likes the founders because they "won't die," and are "very imaginative."

4. In winter 2012 YCombinator had 7 women co-founders. None of them CTOs.
