In the beginning, mining was a difficult process and miners didn’t get enough quantities of digital currency. Cryptocurrency mining requires a powerful GPU, a high amount of electricity, and a mining rig. Whichever cryptocurrency you are going to mine, the first step is to purchase or build a crypto mining rig. A mining rig is a specialized computer, specially designed for mining, featuring all the necessary components of a computer, including RAM, motherboard, storage, and CPU. Since purchasing a mining rig is very expensive, you can consider building one. Building a mining rig will cost you around a couple of thousands of dollars. Before you start building a rig, you have to purchase certain mining rig components. Below are the essential components:

  • Motherboard
  • Power Supply
  • RAM
  • GPU Frame
  • Storage (Hard Drive or SSD)

GPU is the main component of a mining rig, which significantly influences the performance of the mining rig. Selecting the right one depends on the hash rate and power efficiency. GPUs provide a higher hash rate than that of CPUs.

How to Build a Cryptocurrency Mining Rig?

Once you have acquired all the above-mentioned elements, the next step is to build your mining rig. Follow the below steps:

Attach the Motherboard

Place the motherboard outside the mining frame. You can put it in a box with foam or an anti-static bag beneath it. Ensure that the level holding down the CPU socket protection is released.

Attach the Processor

The next step is to attach the process to your motherboard. Plug the selected CPU into the motherboard socket. You should be careful while removing it since there will be thermal paste stuck to the fan of the CPU. 

Mark both the socket of the motherboard and the side of the CPU for better understanding. You have to be vigilant while connecting your CPU pins to the motherboard socket because the pins can easily bend, damaging the whole CPU.

Installing RAM

Now you have to install the RAM or memory system. The process is relatively simple. Just insert the RAM module into the RAM socket in the motherboard. Open the side brackets of the motherboard’s slot and carefully push the RAM module into the RAM socket.

RAM can only lock into the socket in just one way. So you have to push harder sometimes to place the RAM in the correct place. The side brackets will lock in automatically once the RAM has been inserted appropriately.

Fixing the Motherboard to the Frame

Now you have to fix the motherboard onto the frame carefully. You must be extra careful while handling the motherboard, as it should not be damaged in the bottom. If you have a metal frame, then place the motherboard appropriately by placing the frame at the point where the holes for the screw are present. Once you have placed it properly, tightly fix the screws to attach the motherboard correctly.

Attaching the Power Supply Unit

The power supply must be set up near the motherboard. Ensure that there is enough space in the mining rig to add the PSU in it. Locate the 24-pin power connector available in the motherboard. 

Carefully connect the power to the motherboard. The 8-pin power connector of the CPU must be connected to the motherboard placed near the processor. Do not mix up the PCI-e 6+2 power conductor with the CPU connector since they both have 8-pin connectors.

Attaching USB risers

Now connect the x16 riser to the PCI-e x1. The PCI-ex1 should be connected to the motherboard. Now you have to power up the risers with electricity. 

Use 2 Molex or SATA cables for each PSU cable when connecting all the corresponding power cables to each of the USB risers.

Attaching GPUs

Firmly place the graphics card on the frame with the help of USB risers. Now connect the PCI-e 6+2 power connectors to the GPU. Now connect all these connectors to the 5 ports available in the GPUs.

Turn on your Rig

The final step is to double-check whether all the cables are connected properly or not. The graphics card should be connected to the main PCE-E slot, which should be connected to the monitor.

Finally, connect the mouse and keyboard, and turn on your rig. To turn on your rig, connect the power switch to the power pins on the motherboard. If it turns on successfully, your rig is working fine.
