I worry that Facebook is killing meaningful communication.

OMG like totally.
MY sense is that the leading edge of teenagers has already moved on. To an extent, they've moved on to Instagram where they stamp their "like" on a picture (instead of text) with a follow, no words at all. I don't know whether it's good or bad, but it IS significant.
Fear not: Verbal communications is not a lost skill. Teenagers have NOT lost their ability to talk, they've simply morphed the platform for communication to a new level. It was getting creepy having all those adults underfoot in Facebook.
Instagram does allow comments; in practice said comments are a sentence or less.
Facebook has lost a lot of the young people, which is why Facebook bought Instagram.
Eggzactly so.
