Female interests != shopping

It makes me a little sad when I see female tech entrepreneurs start sites to sell clothes, makeup, and baby stuff. :(

The results would probably be less successful if the average male tech entrepreneur decided to sell clothes. http://www.gq.com/style/profiles/201108/worst-dressed-men-silicon-valley-mark-zuckerberg

http://manpacks.com/ has a certain elegant simplicity to it, but is clearly pandering to the reverse stereotype.

Manpacks would be better if they sent an occasional beer with their care packages.

But then they would not be allowed to deliver to MD and about 10 other states.

Mind you, I'm almost surprised that there is not one state that has a law against lewd and lascivious underwear imports.

eBay has a policy against selling used undergarments but their adult-only section has a surprisingly wide selection of new ones.

In thinking about your comment, Luke, what surprised me was how many beer-of-the-month clubs I can now find on the Internets.

What also surprised me was the stats behind Birchbox:

Birchbox has adopted a subscription, box of the month model where members receive curated makeup and beauty products. Each month, users receive at least four premium samples of cosmetics, shipped to their homes from over 80 high end beauty retailers like Kiehl’s, Laura Mercier, Smashbox, Nars and Cargo...

[Birchbox now has] 45,000 customers [after one year in business], all of whom are paying up to $10 per month for a box or $110 for a year...

That's right, after only one year in business they're now at a $6 million a year revenue run rate.

I know Joyce started this Convo lamenting how Birchbox's founders Hayley Barna and Katia Beauchamp started Yet Another Webshopping Network, but I gotta admit that's a beautiful business they've built in a very short amount of time.

The next Mark Zuckerberg will NOT build a shopping site. http://pandawhale.com/convo/136/hopefully-the-new-mark-zuckerberg-will-be-female
