What is 106 Miles and what is PandaWhale?

PandaWhale is a Silicon Valley software company incorporated on January 11, 2011 by the founders of 106 Miles (Joyce Park and Adam Rifkin).

The mission of PandaWhale is to expand the Web through social saving.

The values of PandaWhale are the values of the Web.

PandaWhale operates independently of 106 Miles, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.

106 Miles is a social network of 6000 startup founders, engineers, and friends in Silicon Valley and Southern California.

The 106 Miles network is a community of people willing to do "five minute favors" for each other to help with entrepreneurial endeavors.

We started 106 Miles in January 2005.

The mission of 106 Miles is to educate and empower entrepreneurial engineers through conversations.

The values of 106 Miles are Reputation, Innovation, Solidarity, and Education.

The name 106 Miles comes from The Blues Brothers: "It's 106 miles to Chicago. We've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses." "Hit it!" That, to us, is the epitome of what it's like to be an entrepreneur.

106 Miles holds in-person 106 Miles meetups several times per month.

PandaWhale.com is a place for conversations among startup founders, engineers, and friends; many members of 106 Miles frequent this website.

Here is a list of frequently asked questions about 106 Miles.

Additional information relating to our use of OAuth tokens

OAuth tokens are "keys" unique to your that given to us by an OAuth provider (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc) when you agree to "connect" your account on that platform to your PandaWhale account.

These tokens give apps the ability to access information about your FB/Twitter account ("external account") and use that to improve your in-app experience.

However, with power comes the potential for abuse, and there's always the risk that an app will use your tokens (and therefore your personal information) in a way that you did not intend or do not approve of.

How PandaWhale uses your OAuth tokens

Specific examples of what we do:

  • Reading data from your external account to identify you when log you in to PandaWhale.
  • Publishing stories to your external account when you have explicitly chosen to do so (FB shares, tweets, etc.).
  • Monitoring activity on posts/shares you did FROM PandaWhale in order to import comments your friends made on your external account (e.g., importing Twitter @-replies or FB comments on your share of a convo so that they become comments on the original PandaWhale convo).

What we DON'T do:

  • We will NEVER publish stories to your external account unless you clearly indicate that you want us to do so.
  • We will not store any of your information available through OAuth APIs unless it is directly necessary in order for the functioning of a feature that you are using. For example, if you publish a story to Twitter or Facebook, we permanently store all replies that your friends make to these tweets/stories as part of the process of importing them to our convos.
  • We will not auto-follow or otherwise auto-connect you to other PandaWhale users that you are friends with on an external account.

So far we do not have any clear in-context notices about exactly what personal info is stored and under what circumstances it is stored, but that is something I would like to do in the fullness of time.

We want you to completely understand how we use your data and to have the opportunity to opt out if you ever decide you don't want to share said info. We want complete transparency.
