That reminds me of the kid and the analyst in Sixth Sense, and equally the kid and the analyst in Poltergeist 2/3 where the psychologist claims she is tricking him by looking frightened at something behind him that he "thinks" isn't there.
They look meaner but usually it means they're frightened or they're angry.
It's a fight-or-flight response.
