The Nordic countries: update your assumptions about why they are rich and happy
Joyce Park stashed this in Economics
They are no longer just tax-and-spend socialists! They are pragmatic and transparent in delivering services to their citizens. "The state is popular not because it is big but because it works. A Swede pays tax more willingly than a Californian because he gets decent schools and free health care."
I just went back and re-read this article. It's even more relevant now than 18 months ago.
Getting decent schools and free health care are getting value for the money paid.
I mean, the healthcare isn't really free because they're paying for it, but it's worth more than what they pay.
