The Big Bang Theory ruined Raiders of the Lost Ark last week by saying that Indiana Jones was irrelevant to the story. The Nazis would have found the ark and opened it even if he did not exist.

It's true tho.. the only point where Indy is useful to the story is retrieval after the opening: i.e. how did it end up back in the US when that was a large submarine base and the nearest Allied anything would have been British?

Exactly right! Indiana is only useful at the very end. He's the epilogue. He's the denouement.
