Why have young people in Japan stopped having sex? | The Observer

Sad. Confusing.

Frustrating.

What? This?

Although there has long been a pragmatic separation of love and sex in Japan – a country mostly free of religious morals – sex fares no better. A survey earlier this year by the Japan Family Planning Association (JFPA) found that 45% of women aged 16-24 "were not interested in or despised sexual contact". More than a quarter of men felt the same way.

Yes. For this group, is something replacing sex?  What is gratifying to them?

I'm wondering if there is even a word in japanese for "moderation".... If you're a man, you're either a loser or a salaryman with a wife at home and child, and nothing else.. If you're a woman you're either enslaved to your job or enslaved to your family, and nothing else... It's like they just don't comprehend that other lifestyle options are possible.

What is gratifying to them depends on the person.

For some, it's work. For others, it's videogames. I'm guessing there are other hobbies, too.

Bonsai.

Many males are "hikkikomori" or "shut-ins" they often only leave (their parents home) at night to go to nearby conbini (7-11, Lawsons) convenient stores to buy food. They don't venture out during the day.

Then there are otaku (overly obsessed fans) they are the folks who have collected every esoteric version or model from a particular tv, manga, or book series.

Then there are cosplayers who dress up like characters.

After this you have multitudes of social groups that self select and dress a like. When I was younger there were: ganguro (girls who wear dark makeup [facetan]), yankees (folks that dress like hip hop badboys/badgirls), white-face (girls with extremely light white faces [some bleached])... the lists of genres and subgenres go on and on...

Many young adult men and women live at home (low rent) and still save up to travel, handbags/fashion, own a car (very expensive to maintain), play video games.

I guess if you're not worried about finding a place to live on your own, spend most time working or at home, and are not trying to get laid you have a lot of time to worry about this crap.

When you said this...

Many young adult men and women live at home (low rent) and still save up to travel, handbags/fashion, own a car (very expensive to maintain), play video games.

...I thought to myself how much this also describes many 20something Americans these days.

Many questions and few answers...

The "Lost Decade" is proceeded by the "Lost Libido."
