The Better Life Cleaning Products was developed by Good Friends Kevin & Tiffany Tibbs and Tim & Nancy Barklage who started turning their inventions into theClean Happens Business back in 2009. Both couples each had their first baby within months of each other which not only strengthened their friendship bond, it also was the catalyst for the Better Life Brand to be Born.
So how do two young couples start a business making Green Cleaning Products in what I would assume is a very crowded market, and succeeds beyond their wildest dreams within a few short years? It all started one day when Tim Barklage was having a conversation with his wife Nancy about the chemicals on the label of the cleaning products they were using. Like any man wanting to impress his new Bride, of course he knew what all these names on the label were and why most of them didn't need to be included but still be an effective cleaning product. And just like many Husbands before his time, Tim realized he might of stuck his foot in his mouth when his wife said in so many words "O.K., then make me something better".
The video below is Nancy's version how Better Life cleaning products started:
All of the Better Life Cleaning Products must pass 3 very stick requirements before being added to the Clean Happens lineup:
- Better Life Products are safe for people and pets if swallowed. All products are made with plants, vegetables, and water with no fragrances, dyes or harmful chemicals of any kind.
- They are safe for the Environment containing no ethoxylate which is common in most cleaning products. Anything carrying the Better Life Brand must also biodegrade double the rate of the industry standard.
- The Green Cleaning Product MUST Work better than conventional products and outperform the Name Brands using harmful chemicals.
They had one of the best Shark Tank pitches ever:
Tim Barklage and Kevin Tibbs pitch their green cleaning product line called Better Life in the Shark Tank during episode 501 on November 1. Kevin is the “mad skilled scientist” of the operation while Tim is the marketing and branding guy. The two got together. The life-long friends got the idea for Better Life cleaning products when they had kids. They couldn’t stand the idea of their toddlers putting their fingers in their mouths after touching surfaces that had traces of toxic cleaning chemicals on them.
They set out to create Better Life cleaning products from plant-derived sources and now have dozens of cleaning products with catchy names like “I Can See Clearly, Wow” and “Even the Kitchen Sink.” Better Life products are available at Whole Foods markets nationwide, Crate and Barrel, Bristol Markets, and a host of other locations. The also sell on Amazon. This is another mature business in the Shark Tank looking for advice and guidance to take a successful company to the next level.
After much shark competition they ended up with a great deal with Lori Grenier, the queen of QVC.
Congrats, Better Life!
