Empathy Is Our Most Important Attribute
Ed Finkler stashed this in empathy
I wrote this, so I'm extremely biased, but I think it's important to talk more about this:
Empathy empowers us to more productively interact with another individual or group, even when they may be at odds with our own beliefs. If we don’t understand their reasons and motivations, it’s very difficult to find any common ground and move forward productively.

Your writeup is a fascinating read, but it makes me wonder if empathy is a skill.
I think listen in is a skill, and empathy is the by-product of listening.
I went by the def from New Oxford American Dictionary: "the ability to understand and share the feelings of another." I called it an "attribute," but I think ability or skill work (maybe better).
