Kurt Cobain: feminist, gay icon, ‘last great rock star’
Geege Schuman stashed this in Kurt Cobain
Stashed in: Music, Rock!, Nirvana!
So, Jack White, Josh Homme, Julian Casablancas, Matthew Bellamy, Bono, Anthony Keidis, Alex Turners etc. are not so great rock stars? : )
"What was remarkable about Cobain, however, was his determination to carve out a new role as a rock star. Cobain sharply mocked the old-school sexism in rock and forced attitudinal changes, particularly towards women and gays. In their pivotal Smells Like Teen Spirit, the band eschewed leggy models for tough, anarchist cheerleaders"
Smells Like Teen Spirit was the name of a deodorant. Cobain used the expression without knowing from where it was from, and made a song with it. He probably wouldn't have if he had remembered.
So yeah, I have some doubts about this kind of artistically interpreted journalism. : P
" Cobain came up with the song's title when his friend Kathleen Hanna, at the time the lead singer of the riot grrrl band Bikini Kill, spray painted "Kurt Smells Like Teen Spirit" on his wall. Since they had been discussing anarchism, punk rock, and similar topics, Cobain interpreted the slogan as having a revolutionary meaning. What Hanna actually meant, however, was that Cobain smelled like the deodorant Teen Spirit, which his then-girlfriend Tobi Vail wore. Cobain later claimed he was unaware that it was a brand of deodorant until months after the single was released.[10] "

Here's your Casablancas dialogue:
"One knob twiddle and it all collapses.Totally! You'd be surprised. You change the sound of one keyboard and it's just like, "Wow, this sounds bad." And not Michael Jackson bad, either. But yeah, it collapses. Like Jenga. Terrible analogy. Sorry."

Here's your Cobain dialogue:
During the interview, Cobain attacks the microphone with a pair of scissors, jokes around and offers up his tips on keeping his voice – “I gargle glass and eat kerosene. I smoke Camel filters.” Cobain also answered questions about the underground acts that were signed as Nirvana exploded.
“Most independent bands don’t last more than five years anyhow, so who cares [if the labels aren’t in it for the music]?” Cobain explains. “[It] means we’ll get some money out of it instead of being ripped off by [Black Flag founder Greg Ginn’s label] SST for five years. Who wants to end up like the Rolling Stones 40th anniversary thing anyway. You don’t (want) to make it seem like a career.”
