Joe Blistein explains:
Peeps, everyone's favorite gooey Easter (or year-round) treat, will be heading to movie theaters, Deadline reports, with filmmaker Adam Rifkin (Detroit Rock City) optioning the TV and movie rights to the hugely popular marshmallow candy.

The film will be made in a similar vein to The Lego Movie, telling the story of a wayward Peep who is misplaced the night before a Peeps diorama contest and has to venture through a slew of different shoebox worlds in order to find his way back home. Rifkin and his producers plan on incorporating various pop culture figures, fictional and non-fictional, into the movie, just like The Lego Movie scored "cameos" from the likes of Abe Lincoln and Batman.
Rifkin was inspired by the Peeps dioramas his niece and nephew made, later discovering the wide swath of similar contests, one of the most notable hosted each year by The Washington Post (this year's winner used Peeps to recreate the scene of Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous "I Have A Dream" speech). The director has previous experience with family-friendly movies, having written the 1998 action-figure adventure movie Small Soldiers and the 2007 Underdog adaptation. His next directorial project, however, is Director's Cut, which tells the story of a movie star and his stalker, and was written by Penn and Teller's Penn Jillette.
It seems like Rifkin isn't the only one taking cues from the success of the The Lego Movie either: Deadline also reports that Disney has tapped Jon Turteltaub to direct a new movie based on It's A Small World and has hired Lego Movie's Dan Lin to help produce.
