Everyone loves a horse trainer who gets to the Kentucky Derby late in his career with a Thoroughbred of undistinguished pedigree. This year's model is California Chrome, out of an $8000 dam and a "meh" sire -- but the favorite to win the Kentucky Derby.

I do love the late bloomer aspect of this story. 

I don't even think the sire ascends to the "meh" category. Apparently his stud fee at the time was $2500, which is ROCK BOTTOM.
