A San Francisco 'Painted Lady' Sells For $900K Under Asking Price

The "Painted Ladies" are one of San Francisco's most photographedtourist attractions.

Owner Michael Shannon, 66, bought the Queen Anne Victorian in 1975 for $65,000.

Shannon's current spouse, Thomas Zickgraf, 41, said, "Living here feels like Disneyland at times. Everyone's outside taking photos and looking at the house, so you feel like you're inside an attraction."

While it's not clear if that's the reason for the reduced selling price, The San Francisco Chronicle seems to think so: "Maybe buying a piece of San Francisco history isn't that appealing if thousands of tourists are taking a picture of your front door every day," the newspaper writes.

The last Painted Lady to sell was the house next door to Shannon's, which belonged to Alice Walker, author of The Color Purple. That house sold for $1.2 million 10 years ago. Because there were no other comparable sales in the neighborhood, Shannon based his price on square footage (about 4,600), which is 1,000 square feet more than any of the other Painted Ladies.

Shannon's house has been featured in about 70 movies, ads and TV shows, including Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978). But it is perhaps best known for appearing in the opening montage of Full House, the popular TV sitcom that aired from 1987 to 1995.

$900k under the asking price was over 3 million bucks. For a house that cost $65k forty years ago. Which is insane.

The largest and oldest house of San Francisco's seven "Painted Ladies," which anchors the corner of "Postcard Row," has finally been sold for $3.1 million, $900k below its original asking price.

Btw I love the use of the phrase, "[rich white guy's] current spouse".

current spouse is awesome phrase

The writer explains it in the comments.  :)

Aww, this is much less salacious than I hoped.

I should have phrased this better (or with more explanation.) My goal was to recognize that Shannon had bought the house in 1975 with his partner, who later died. Some time later, Shannon married. His husband is now 41, so would have been too young to have bought the house with Shannon in 1975. I thought that would have been confusing. As it turns out, I fear I've confused everyone anyway. My apologies!

My house and street was just seen in the blockbuster Abduction staring Taylor Lautner.  It can be yours for well under a million.  It is a 1860 Victorian. (Russell Crowe and Jane Fonda were in the hood recently, as was Tom cruise,)

You people out west are are crazy.

Ha! Why do celebrities come to Pennsylvania?

Jane's blog.   But also DARPA and google are moving in. Obama is here on Tuesday at TechShop.

I am serious. Get out and move to Pittsburgh.  RAND did extensive research for new location and choose here.  If you are 1% then sure live anywhere but for mere mortals or employees of 1%ers Pittburgh is unmatched.

Look at zillow and see what 3 million buys.

I didn't realize Jane Fonda is in Pittsburgh these days. Thanks for the link!
