I watched this before school every morning in grade school, It was like an ongoing soap opera.
Star Blazers is an American animated television series adaptation of the Japanese anime series, Space Battleship Yamato I (1974), II (1978), and III (1980) (宇宙戦艦ヤマト Uchū Senkan Yamato?). Star Blazers was first broadcast in the United States in 1979. Significantly, it was the first popular English-translated anime that had an overarching plot and storyline that required the episodes to be shown in order. It dealt with somewhat more mature themes than other productions aimed at the same target audience at the time. As a result, it paved the way for future arc-based, plot-driven anime translations.
Maybe, what criteria would it have to meet? Are all cartoons anime? What is the difference? Is anime only from Japan? a certain style?

Although the first anime was in 1917, anime didn't really take off till the 1960s.
So this was one of the first anime.
This might have been the first major introduction of Anime to the U.S. and after reading the Wikipedia definition again:

It very specifically says Japanese anime series.
I thought the character Derek Wildstar was hot! (when I was 11 or 12 ;)

Speed Racer, also known as Mach GoGoGo (マッハGoGoGo Mahha GōGōGō?), is a Japanese anime/manga franchise about automobile racing. Mach GoGoGo was originally serialized in print in Shueisha's 1958 Shōnen Book. It was released in tankōbon book form by Sun Wide Comics, and later re-released in Japan by Fusosha. Adapted into anime by Tatsunoko Productions, its 52 episodes aired on Fuji TV from April 1967 to March 1968.
English adaptation
The English rights to Mach GoGoGo were acquired by syndicator Trans-Lux, and Speed Racer premiered on American television in the fall of 1967. In the series, Speed’s full name was Go Mifune, in homage to Japanese film star Toshiro Mifune. His name, Americanized, became Speed Racer.[4] His adventures centered on his powerful Mach 5 car, his girlfriend Trixie, his little brother Spritle (with his pet chimp Chim-Chim), and his mysterious older brother, Racer X.
You beat me to it. Speed Racer seems like it opened America up to anime.
