what interests me here is what subculture existed back then which endorsed this? particularly the full body ink. Tattooing was incredibly rare in the West _period_ until after WW2, let alone that much work.
Circuses.
By the end of the Twenties, American circuses employed over 300 people with full-body tattoos who earned up to $200 per week.
