Everyone in corporate America talks about diversity, but when a woman or person of color tries to practice it -- s/he is automatically considered less competent. The only group that does not get dinged for sponsoring someone of their own group is WHITE MALES PROMOTING WHITE MALES. That is how much we have internalized cultural assumptions about competence at work.
White males also don't get dinged for sponsoring women and people who aren't white.
Corporate America still has a lot of room for improvement.
I like the suggested re-framing of the issue, using the term “demographic-unselfishness”.
Agreed, "demographic unselfishness" is a great term.
