The Oculus Rift virtual reality headset is largely associated with immersive gaming, but it could eventually help save lives. A group of medical professionals filmed an entire surgery using a Go Pro Dual Hero head-mounted camera, resulting in a 3D video that medical students can watch in order to get a virtual taste of the operating room.
Financed by Paris' Moveo Foundation, the project is a collaboration between virtual reality expert Remi Rousseau and Dr. Thomas Gregory. Dr. Gregory recorded the entire duration of a hip replacement operation, with the Dual Hero capturing a 180-degree viewpoint for students to watch on an Oculus Rift.
