There are 5 schools of Tibetan Buddhism. The Dalai Lama sect is the newest and most historically political. Bon is the pre historic pre Buddhist religion dating back 20,000 years.
The head of Bon, is the abbot of Menri Monastery, the oldest continuous monastery since 1405. The first was around 1070 but destroyed by flood in 1300s and rebuilt.
The Gelug school was founded around 1400 and took over Tibet in 1700 with help of Mongolian warlords.
Rinpoche is among the highest teachers of the Bon. Even today people that should know better say there are four schools.
