My grandfather and an aunt died of typhus (which is a bacteria not a virus, but still not a great way to go). Another aunt lost the use of her legs from polio. You better believe that my mother lined up for hours to get us vaccinated by the Red Cross, when that was literally the only place in Korea that had vaccines.

It's sad but true that people are visual, emotional, sometimes herdlike creatures. The way to stop anti-vax BS is not scientific articles, sadly. It is to bring forth as many examples in the media and social media as possible of this scenario:

* Healthy, attractive, preferably white upper-middle class family (sorry!). Chooses to send kids to school with a lot of anti-vaxers.

* Kid gets life-threatening disease. Show exactly how awful it is as a parent to watch your child suffer. Show that even super healthy kids with great access to hospitals can die. Show the medical bills.

* Afterwards, family sues school for allowing anti-vax. Preferably also sues individual families that did not vaccinate. Make the point that you can't shove your beliefs off onto other people as medical or funeral bills.

That's the American way! Manipulate emotions through media, and re-set risks through litigation. Sad to say, the American way is NOT for the government to back sound scientific policy for the good of all.
