A Web-based business now pedaling hard to gain ground in the Bay Area allows bike owners anywhere in the world who aren’t using their two-wheelers to lease them out by the hour, day or week to cyclists in need of something to ride.
Spinlister, a business hatched in a tech incubator in San Francisco in 2012 and headquartered in Los Angeles, is making a push locally, hoping to increase the number of members — now about 2,000 — who list their bikes for leasing around the region.

It'll never work. People expect the bikes to be free or city-funded.  They need to reverse the incentive somehow. Instead of paying for the bike service and doing something beneficial/good, they should be rewarded for using the bikes instead of clogging up the roads. The only way I can see doing that is building in some sort of bike GPS system into the frame and then rewarding people with something based on how far they go and how often with a preference to rewarding repetitive work commutes.Â
That's a neat idea. I hope one of these companies tries to deploy that kind of biking incentive system.Â
