James Clear delivers yet again:

Yes, if you build something people might judge it or dislike it. But if you don’t create and share the things that you have inside of you, then you’ll commit the far worse crime of rejecting yourself. You can either be judged because you created something or ignored because you left your greatness inside of you.

The main thing to fear is not being yourself.

Although it's very challenging to learn to not let the haters get to you.

Mm, for example I remember reading how much hate mail, abuse, death threats and other nonsense Stephen King gets. It seems as soon as you are famous, or at least known, you're a target. From stalking to verbal abuse, and all the adoring fans in between. It must be hard to deal with.

I like to remember these two quotes:

"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it" [attributed to Voltaire, though was probably his biographer...]

"No one can make you feel inferior without your consent" - Eleanor Roosevelt.

That way, you can respect why something was said, but not let it affect you. In theory.

I'm totally with you.

It's not just people like Stephen King.

Have you read the Kathy Sierra post-gamergate blog post about the koolaid point?

The haters who move on to threats to personal safety are REALLY hard to deal with.

They are the ugliest side of the Internet, and it's hard to be brave when they're threatening violence.

Horrible.I also recently attended a talk by Everyday Sexism author and activist, Sarah Bates. Of all the stories she had to tell of other women and their struggles with harassment, abuse and general sexism, I was possibly most horrified at how strong she, herself, needs to be now her name is "out there". Threats of rape and death, directly to her. I went and asked her about it at the end of her talk, even.

There are many things in life I won't ever understand. The mentality of trolls/haters is up there.

Yeah, it's difficult to understand why a person would think that threats, abuse, and violence are acceptable to employ in anything but an exceptional circumstance.

It affects everything on the Internet to some extent, including even Wikipedia:

Sarah Bates does sound very strong to endure such awful behavior from other people.

I like the phrase "Run to the Roar":

When you are thinking about doing something and it feels scary, when it feels like this big lion is waiting at the finish line and he’s roaring and he’s ferocious and he’s going to tear you apart… you should just run toward that lion anyway. Run to the roar. ~Tina Essmaker (full interview)

It’s not your job to tell yourself no. It’s not your job to reject yourself or grade yourself or debate the value or worthiness of your ideas. Your job is to create. Your job is to share. Your job is to overcome fear and run the race.
