There are interesting things to say about distinct subcategories of dumpling. The above-mentioned similarity between wontons and tortellini is probably not coincidental, for instance, but a result of commercial and culinary exchange along the old Silk Road. A more or less identical food item exists in most of the cultures of Central and East Asia. They are all the same food, just as the words for this food across Eurasia—mandu in Korean, mantou in China, manti in Uzbek—are all the same word.
