In gaps of the dermis, the collagen skin acted as a template and would dissolve over time leaving only real skin that provided all the benefits scarring couldn’t— like temperature regulation, and the absorption of vitamin D, and the sensation of touch.
So in addition to keeping children alive, it was giving them back the dignity and happiness that makes living worthwhile.
